Salesforce.com for India – Learning’s from “Behind the Cloud”

I picked up a bunch of learning’s that I noted for Exotel, and something I thought other start-ups should also pick up from this amazing play book from Marc Benioff, the Founder & CEO at Salesforce.com

Let me explain why the 10 points make sense in a slightly elaborate manner:

1. Differentiate – “No Software” was a disruptive thought process at that time in the age of Services IT and CD Software, but that’s their Logo and they envisioned SaaS and attacked Software right at the heart of it.

2. Consistently engage with media, keep them on your side, and help them, @Salesforce picked up a lot of initial media attention to help generate hype and buzz.

3. Nothing spreads better than Customer References. Always share and make existing customers interact with prospective customers.

4. Use Events/Conferences smartly, to your advantage.

5. Salesforce Foundation keeps employees and everyone in the ecosystem feel they are serving and they actually are a much bigger goal, than just making money.

6. He urges to think big, always, and act and behave big. Stop calling yourself a startup for too long.

7. Hire folks who fit the 4 H’s – Hungry, Humble, Honest & Happy.

8. Try to make your vendors, customers and employees and even competitors win.

9. Like in Hitch, Will Smith’s focus was on his customer and making him Win honestly, and he did, and that’s what companies should do too. Make their customers win.

10. Reliability in technology might be a technology issue, but must be solved by “communication”.

There is much more, and you can probably borrow the book from our Exotel library or buy it online :)

We hope to be the Salesforce for India, as our product evolves, we have a belief that will be true.
